Lubao - A Town in Pampanga
Named after the word “lubo” (engl. low). It is known for producing sugar cane, rice, fish and the
fragrant sampaguita (the fragrant sampaguita is the Philippine national flower). It is considered as
the oldest town in Pampanga. Lubao plays a significant role in the struggle of the American and
Filipinos during the Japanese Occupation. The locals risk their lives by giving foods and medicines
to the marchers of the "death march". Guerillas and other underground movements against the
Japanese was formed in this town. Lubao is the hometown of the two Philippine Presidents: Pres.
Diosdado Macapal and his daughter Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo. The San Agustin Church is the
oldest church in Pampanga built by the Augustinian friars in 1572.
